I love essential oils. I use them for so many different things.

I use them for sleep support, energy support, and to boost my immune system. But sometimes, I just want to use them to make me smell good.

Usually, I’ll just grab some lavender or tangerine essential oil and dab a few drops on my wrists, or I’ll use my DIY body sprays.

But this morning, I actually spent some time creating and putting together DIY roll-on perfume blends, and let me tell you, they are amazing!

They smell so good and are perfect for throwing in your purse and using on the go.

I used to be obsessed with store-bought perfume and body spray, but a few years ago, I actually ended up throwing away every synthetic perfume and body spray I owned.

Most perfumes and body sprays on the market today deliver numerous petroleum-based synthetic toxins into the body.

Although many fragrances have a floral or fruity scent, you might be surprised to know many perfumes contain little to no natural ingredients.

Many of the scents are created in a lab.

Pyridine, benzophenone, methyl eugenol, and styrene are just a few of the toxic chemicals that are in most perfumes and synthetic fragrances.

These chemicals are known to disrupt hormones, cause reproductive and fertility problems, cause neurological degeneration, and so much more!

And that is just the chemicals we know about!

Perfume ingredients do not need to be disclosed because they are protected under the U.S. Fair Packaging and Label Act because they are considered trade secrets.

I’m at the point in my life where I just choose to make my own DIY products rather than worry about all the junk in store-bought items.

I’m over it! Until companies use better ingredients and are more transparent about their ingredients, I’ll continue to make my own products.

It’s just not worth it!

DIY Roll-On Perfume Ingredients

You’ll need the following ingredients and supplies to make your own homemade roll-on perfume.

5ml or 10ml Roller Bottle

You will need a 5ml or 10ml roller bottle to make this DIY roll-on perfume.

I made these perfume rollers using 5ml bottles, but you can use 10ml if you prefer. If you use a 10ml roller bottle and try one of my custom blends below, you’ll need to double the amount of essential oil.

If you don’t have a roller bottle on hand, I recommend these ones or these ones.

Whatever you decide to use, just make sure it is made from glass. Plastic rollers should never be used with essential oils.

Pure essential oils are very potent, and the plastic may begin to deteriorate and leach into the essential oils over time.

You should also ensure that your roller bottle has a metal rollerball. Again, it’s best to avoid plastic.

Fractionated Coconut Oil

Fractionated coconut oil is needed to dilute the essential oils. Most essential oils should never be applied to the skin without first diluting them with carrier oil.

Fractionated coconut oil is my favorite carrier oil to use when making roller blends because it is unscented, colorless, and very affordable.

However, you can also use almond or jojoba oil if you don’t have fractionated coconut oil.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are what give this homemade roll-on perfume its wonderful scent. The essential oils you need will depend on the scent you are trying to achieve.

I’ve created several custom blends that you can check out below.

If you want to put together all three of the custom scents, you will need all eight of the following essential oils.

Be sure to use only 100% pure essential oils. Not only is it dangerous to use synthetic essential oils, but the scent won’t be as strong, and it won’t last as long.

Plus, if you’re going to use synthetic, you might as well keep buying store-bought perfumes and body sprays.

I highly recommend Simply EarthPlant Therapy, or Far & Wild essential oils. These three brands sell high-quality oils at affordable prices. I’ve been using these brands for years, and they are amazing!

If you want to learn more about these companies and their essential oils, you can check out my reviews on each company below.

If you decide to buy from Simply Earth, you can use the code HAPPYHEARTFREE to receive a free $45 Simply Earth gift card with the purchase of your first recipe box.

Dried Flowers (Optional)

Dried flowers are entirely optional. I just used them for aesthetics. I think they make the perfume roller blends look so beautiful.

Small Funnel

A small funnel makes adding the carrier oil to the roller bottle so much easier.

How to Make DIY Perfume at Home

To make DIY perfume with essential oils, simply follow the directions below.

If you decide to use dried flowers, the first thing you’ll want to do is add a few pinches to the roller bottle.

Next, add the essential oils to the roller bottle. Custom blends are below.

And that’s it. It only takes a few minutes.

Below are the custom blends I created. Remember, I used 5ml roller bottles. If you decide to use 10ml bottles, you’ll need to double the amount of drops.

These blends have a very light scent but are definitely noticeable.

If the scent is not strong enough, you can increase the number of essential oil drops. Just be sure to keep the ratios the same.

Keep in mind we tend to notice scents on others a lot more than we notice scents on ourselves. So try not to get too carried away 🙂

How to Use DIY Roll-On Perfume

To use this DIY roll-on perfume, simply roll it on your collarbone and wrist area. I don’t recommend rubbing your wrists together, though. If you want the scent to last longer, let it air dry.

How to Store Homemade Roll-On Perfume?

Try keeping your roller bottle in a cool, dark place to maintain potency. Essential oils can go bad if exposed to ultraviolet radiation.

When Does this DIY Roll-On Perfume Expire?

This DIY roll-on perfume will expire whenever the ingredients that you use are set to expire.

That said, essential oils and carrier oils like coconut oil have long shelf lives. However, their shelf lives depend on how they are stored.

Carrier oils and essential oils should be stored in a cool, dark place; if not, they can go bad sooner.

I hope that makes sense. It’s best to use fresh ingredients whenever possible to ensure a long shelf life when making homemade products.

Essential oils don’t have a fixed expiration date like food or medicine, but they do degrade over time due to oxidation, exposure to heat, light, and air. Their lifespan depends on the type of oil, how they are stored, and their chemical composition.

Essential oils can stay good anywhere from 1-8 years. It just depends on the type of essential oil. Citrus oils have a short shelf life, and wood and resin oils have a long shelf life.

Fractionated coconut oil has a longer shelf life than regular coconut oil because it has been processed to remove long-chain fatty acids, making it more stable and less prone to rancidity.

It typically lasts 2–5 years when stored properly.

How Long Does the Scent Last?

The scent tends only to last a few hours. So feel free to reapply as often as needed.

Final Thoughts

Creating your own roll-on perfume is a fun, simple, and rewarding way to enjoy a personalized fragrance without synthetic chemicals. With just a few natural ingredients, you can craft a scent that reflects your personality and mood.

Plus, the convenience of a roll-on bottle makes it easy to carry your custom blend wherever you go. Whether you’re experimenting with different essential oils or perfecting your signature aroma, this DIY project is a wonderful way to express your creativity.
