As women, our hormones can be all over the place. Our hormone levels fluctuate often. They go up and down depending on what day of the month it is and how old we are.

Because of our constantly changing hormone levels it can be hard to recognize a hormone imbalance. But did you know that nearly 40-60% of women struggle with a hormonal imbalance?

There are many signs and symptoms associated with a hormonal imbalance. A few common signs include:

  • Irregular periods
  • Memory fog & trouble concentrating
  • Sleep problems
  • Chronic acne
  • Bloating & digestion problems
  • Mood swings
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Low sex drive

Possible causes of hormone imbalance in women

Hormonal imbalances can be caused by many different things. Common causes include:

  • Stress
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Medications
  • Poor diet & nutrition
  • Birth control medications
  • And more!!!

How to tell if you have a hormone imbalance

If you suspect you may have a hormone imbalance I would suggest talking to your doctor. It is super important to have your hormone levels checked. Your doctor should be able to test you to see if your hormone levels are normal.

I know it can be difficult sometimes to get doctors to listen to you and to order the proper tests.

Essential Oils for Healthy Hormones

Essential oils can alleviate many of the symptoms associated with a hormonal imbalance. And can even help to balance the hormones over time.

But please remember some essential oils can cause cramping or uterine contractions during pregnancy. Especially essential oils that affect the hormones.

So if you are pregnant please consult your doctor before using any of the essential oils below.

The Best Essential Oils For Hormone Balance

There are actually many essential oils that can help to support healthy hormones. But for this post, I only included essential oils that were well researched.

Clary Sage

Clary Sage is one of the best essential oils for women. It can be extremely helpful when dealing with hormonal issues.

Clary Sage contains hormone-like components that can help to balance hormones naturally as well as alleviate cramps and bloating.

A study done in 2006 resulted in menstrual cramps being significantly lowered when an essential oil blend including Clary Sage was applied topically to the abdomen area.

Bergamot

Bergamot essential oil is great for boosting your mood and alleviating stress. It also contains pain-relieving properties.

It is a great oil to use during that “time of the month”.

A study done in 2015 found that Bergamot essential oil reduced feelings of stress and anxiety when inhaled.

Because many hormonal imbalances can be caused by stress, Bergamot is a great essential oil to help you destress and support healthy hormones.

Peppermint

Hormone imbalances can cause many physical ailments including headaches. This is why peppermint essential oil can be extremely helpful to women with hormone issues.

Peppermint essential oil is well known for relieving pain and relaxing muscles.

This study found peppermint essential oil to be just as effective as acetaminophen at relieving headache pain.

Because of its ability to reduce pain, peppermint oil is also great for menstrual cramps.

Thyme

Thyme essential oil can help to alleviate stress and anxiety associated with a hormonal imbalance as well as balance hormones.

Thyme essential oil can improve progesterone production. Many women have low progesterone levels.

This study found that thyme essential oil has progesterone balancing effects.

How to use Essential Oils for Hormone Balance & Support

You can use essential oils for hormone support in several different ways. A few of my favorite ways are listed below.

Diffuse | Add a combination of several of the essential oils above to your diffuser.

Add to Bath | You can either create bath oil, bath bombs or bath salts using the essential oils above (recipes coming soon) and add them to your bath.

I don’t recommend adding undiluted essential oils directly to your bath because the oils will just sit on top of the water and can burn/irritate your skin.

I only recommend creating bath bombs, bath salts, or bath oil using the essential oils if you want to use them in the bath.

Apply Topically | My favorite way to use essential oils for hormone balance is to apply topically. Just remember to always dilute essential oils before applying directly to your skin.

Hormone Balancing Roller Blend Ingredients

To make your own hormone balancing essential oil roller blend you’ll just need the items listed below.

Once you’ve gathered your ingredients simply follow the directions below.

  • Add 3 drops of Peppermint essential oil to bottle
  • Add 3 drops of Clary Sage essential oil to bottle
  • Add 3 drops of Bergamot essential oil to bottle
  • Add 3 drops of Thyme essential oil to bottle
  • Fill bottle the rest of the way with Evening Primrose Oil
  • Attach roller ball
  • Roll between hands to blend well

How to Use Roller Blend for Hormone Balance

This roller blend is simple to use. Just gently roll on the abdomen or inner thigh area or apply to inner wrists. You can use up to twice a day.

Even if you don’t have a diagnosed hormone imbalance these essential oils as well as the roller blend can still benefit you by supporting healthy hormones.

This roller blend has helped reduce my menstrual cramps as well as decrease fatigue during that time of the month.
