Because of our constantly changing hormone levels, it can be difficult to recognize a hormone imbalance. But did you know that nearly 40-60% of women struggle with a hormonal imbalance?

How to Tell if You Have a Hormone Imbalance

If you suspect you may have a hormone imbalance, I would suggest talking to your doctor. It is super important to have your hormone levels checked. Your doctor should be able to test you to see if your hormone levels are normal.

Getting doctors to listen to you and order the proper tests can be difficult sometimes.

If your doctor won’t listen, you can order an at-home test kit from Ulta Lab Tests. Their women’s hormone test checks 12 key hormones, including progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone.

You can buy it here.

Essential Oils for Healthy Hormones

Essential oils can alleviate many of the symptoms associated with a hormonal imbalance and can even help to balance hormones over time.

But please remember that some essential oils, especially those that affect hormones, can cause cramping or uterine contractions during pregnancy.

So, if you are pregnant, please consult your doctor before using any of the essential oils below.

The Best Essential Oils for Hormone Balance

There are actually many essential oils that can help support healthy hormones. However, for this post, I only included well-researched essential oils.

Clary Sage Essential Oil

Clary Sage is one of the best essential oils for women. It can be extremely helpful when dealing with hormonal issues.

Clary Sage contains hormone-like components that can help balance hormones naturally and alleviate cramps and bloating.

A 2006 study found that menstrual cramps were significantly lowered when an essential oil blend, including clary sage, was applied topically to the abdomen area.

Bergamot Essential Oil

Bergamot essential oil is great for boosting your mood and alleviating stress. It also contains pain-relieving properties.

It is a great oil to use during that “time of the month.”

A study done in 2015 found that bergamot essential oil reduced feelings of stress and anxiety when inhaled.

Because stress can cause many hormonal imbalances, bergamot is a great essential oil for helping you destress and support healthy hormones.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Hormone imbalances can cause many physical ailments, including headaches. This is why peppermint essential oil can be extremely helpful for women with hormone issues.

Peppermint essential oil is well known for relieving pain and relaxing muscles.

This study found peppermint essential oil as effective as acetaminophen in relieving headache pain.

Because of its ability to reduce pain, peppermint essential oil is also great for menstrual cramp relief.

Thyme Essential Oil

Thyme essential oil can help to alleviate stress and anxiety associated with a hormonal imbalance as well as balance hormones.

Thyme essential oil can also improve progesterone production. Many women have low progesterone levels.

This study found that thyme essential oil has progesterone-balancing effects.

How to Use Essential Oils for Hormone Balance & Support

Essential oils can be used in several different ways to support hormones. I have listed a few of my favorite ways below.

Diffuse | Add a combination of several of the essential oils above to your diffuser.

Add to Bath | You can use the essential oils above to create bath oils, bath bombs, or bath salts and add them to the bath.

I don’t recommend adding undiluted essential oils directly to the bath because the oils will sit on the water’s surface and can burn or irritate your skin.

I only recommend creating bath bombs, bath salts, or bath oil using the essential oils if you want to use them in the bath.

Apply Topically | My favorite way to use essential oils for hormone balance is topically. Just remember to always dilute essential oils before applying them directly to your skin.

I recommend creating a hormone-balancing roller blend. You can check out my roller blend recipe below.

Hormone Balancing Roller Blend Ingredients

You’ll just need the items listed below to make your own hormone-balancing essential oil roller blend.

If you don’t already have a 10ml roller bottle on hand, I recommend these ones or these ones.

Whatever you decide to use, just make sure it is made of glass. Plastic rollers should never be used with essential oils.

Coconut, almond, or jojoba oil can be used instead of evening primrose oil. However, I highly recommend using evening primrose oil.

Evening primrose oil is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)—an omega-6 fatty acid that plays a key role in hormone function and inflammation regulation.

This roller blend is simple to use. Just gently roll it on the abdomen or thigh area or apply it to the inner wrists. You can use it up to twice a day.

Try keeping this hormone-balancing roller blend in a cool, dark place to maintain potency. Essential oils can go bad if exposed to ultraviolet radiation.

  1. What about specific needs? For instance is there a recipe for increasing progesterone level? I heard that it is best to use essential oils depending on where you are in the cycle, so the blend will be different for Follicular and for Lutheal phases.
