The Best Essential Oils For Colds
Colds are no fun! Essential oils can provide relief from many nasty cold symptoms, such as headaches, cough, and congestion. Check out this post for the best essential oils for colds.
Cold and flu season is officially upon us. My family and I have been doing all we can to stay healthy.
We’ve been eating healthy, taking our vitamins, using immune-boosting essential oils, and so much more!
You can check out this post to discover everything we’ve been doing to avoid getting sick.
But just in case one of us does happen to get sick, I’ve decided to stock up on some essential oils for colds.
Essential oils are a highly concentrated form of the natural oils in a plant.
The oil inside a plant operates as the plant’s immune system. It helps protect the plant against predators and disease and aids in plant pollination.
The oil is essential to the life and health of the plant.
Essential oils have many health and wellness benefits and are a great alternative to many toxic products we use daily.

The Dangers of Cold Medicine
Many of the cold medicines prescribed by doctors and available at drugstores are filled with junk, such as high fructose corn syrup, parabens, GMOs, artificial flavors, and colors.
Not to mention that the main active ingredients in cold medicine are drugs. And there are risks and side effects associated with these drugs. So, I try my best to avoid using them, especially on my children.
Essential Oils for Colds
Essential oils are a great, non-toxic alternative to cold medicine. They can provide relief from many cold symptoms.
There are so many essential oils to choose from, but a few are better for colds than others. Below are my must-have essential oils for colds!
1 | Peppermint
Peppermint essential oil is amazing for headaches. Apply a few diluted drops to your temples for headache relief. It’s also a great all-natural decongestant.
Diluted peppermint essential oil can be applied to the chest area or diffused throughout the room to help ease nasal and chest congestion.
Peppermint essential oil should not be used on children under 30 months of age.
2 | Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus essential oil is used in many store-bought cough and cold products—and for good reason. It’s amazing!
Eucalyptus essential oil can help you breathe better by clearing your nasal pathways. It can also help with cough and chest congestion.
Like peppermint essential oil, diluted eucalyptus essential oil can be applied to the chest area or diffused throughout the room to help ease nasal and chest congestion.
You can even use peppermint and eucalyptus essential oil together.

Eucalyptus essential oil should not be used on children under six years of age.
3 | Oregano Oil
Oregano oil is a must-have during cold and flu season. It’s a great immune-boosting essential oil that can also help relieve cold and flu symptoms.
The best ways to use oregano oil when you’re sick are to diffuse it or dilute it and rub it on your chest and feet.
Undiluted oregano oil can be very hot, so be careful. You can click here to learn more about the health benefits of oregano oil.
4 | Tea Tree
Tea tree essential oil is antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiviral, making it one of the best essential oils for colds. It can also help with chest congestion and coughs.
Like the previously mentioned oils, tea tree essential oil works great when added to the diffuser or when diluted and applied to the chest area.
5 | Rosemary
Rosemary is a wonderful immune-boosting essential oil. It can help relieve congestion and fight infection. Rosemary essential oil can be added to the diffuser or diluted and rubbed on the chest area.
Essential Oil Blends For Colds
Essential oil blends are amazing. You get the benefit of many different essential oils without having to actually purchase each individual oil.
My favorite blends for colds are listed below.
- Plant Therapy Germ Fighter
- Simply Earth Breathe Easy
- Plant Therapy Respir Aid
- Eden’s Garden Breathe Easier
Eden’s Garden actually has a respiratory kit that includes the best essential oils for colds, flu, and congestion.
Kid Safe Essential Oil Blends For Colds
As you hopefully noticed above, several of the best essential oils for colds are not for use on children.
Plant Therapy has an entire line of kid-safe essential oil blends. If you’re looking for blends to use on your young children, I highly recommend the kit below.
It includes Germ Destroyer, Immune Boom, and Sniffle Stopper. Check it out here!
They also have all the blends above available in prediluted roller bottles.
Where Should I Buy Essential Oils?
Please do your research before purchasing essential oils. Not all essential oils are created equal, and many are filled with synthetic chemicals and fillers—even essential oils labeled 100% pure.
That said, I don’t believe there is only one essential oil company that is superior to all the rest.
After researching and trying many essential oils, I’ve discovered many essential oil companies that sell high-quality oils.
I love Eden’s Garden, Plant Therapy, and Simply Earth. All of these brands have high-quality oils at very affordable prices.
If you decide to buy from Simply Earth, you can use the code HAPPYHEARTFREE to receive a free $45 Simply Earth gift card with the purchase of your first recipe box.
If you are unfamiliar with Simply Earth or their recipe box, you can check out previous boxes here.
If you order now with the code above, you will receive the recipe box, a big bonus box, and a $45 Simply Earth gift card—all for only $29.99 (new customers only)!
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, essential oils can provide complementary relief for certain cold symptoms, though they should not be considered a substitute for medical treatment.
Essential oils like eucalyptus, peppermint, and tea tree oil have shown potential benefits in easing congestion, soothing sore throats, and promoting relaxation.
Their anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and decongestant properties can make them useful when used in diffusers, steam inhalation, or diluted in topical applications.
However, more rigorous scientific research is needed to fully understand their efficacy and safety, especially for vulnerable groups like pregnant women and children.
Always consult with a healthcare provider before using essential oils, particularly for individuals with underlying health conditions or sensitivities.
