Homemade Essential Oil Room Spray Recipes
Fall is in the air—and not just outside, but inside, too! Thanks to these awesome fall essential oil room spray recipes!
I’m slightly fall-obsessed. I love everything about fall—especially the scents!
I need my home to smell like pumpkin spice all fall long. But I’m not a fan of candles.
Candles might be able to create a pleasant, cozy atmosphere, but they also generate a lot of indoor air pollution. In my opinion, anything that makes your home smell good should also be good for you.
That’s why I rely on essential oils and essential oils alone to keep my home smelling amazing.

Diffusing essential oils is my go-to method for filling the air with the wonderful goodness of fall, but unfortunately, I don’t have a diffuser in every room in my house.
That’s why I decided to make these essential oil room sprays for fall.
Room sprays are perfect for use in rooms without diffusers. They are also great for when you have an unexpected guest on the way, and you don’t have much time to get your diffusers going, but you still want your home to smell amazing.
These essential oil room sprays will come in handy for just about any situation.
DIY Fall Room Spray Ingredients
These fall room sprays are so easy to make, and you only need a few ingredients to put them together. Everything you will need is below.
Spray Bottles
The size of the spray bottle and the number of spray bottles you need are totally up to you. I prefer to use 4-ounce bottles like these. But you can use whichever size you prefer.
Just keep in mind that the recipe below is for a 4-ounce bottle of room spray, so if you decide to use a larger or smaller bottle, you will need to adjust the recipe.
There are three different fall scents listed below. If you plan on making just one scent, then all you will need is one bottle. But if you want to make them all, you will need three bottles.
It’s also really important to only use dark glass bottles. Essential oils contain strong chemical compounds that can break down and react when coming in contact with plastic.
Essential oils can also go bad if exposed to ultraviolet radiation.
Water
Water is the base for these homemade fall room sprays. It is best to use distilled water whenever possible.
The minerals in tap water can clog your spray nozzle and leave residue on your home’s surfaces.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are, of course, what gives these fall room sprays their scent. You will need a variety of essential oils to make all the different fall scents listed below.
I highly recommend using only 100% pure essential oils. A few of my favorite essential oil brands are Plant Therapy, Simply Earth, and Far & Wild essential oils.
Fake essential oils are just as bad as synthetic air fresheners and candles. Only use essential oils that you know are pure.

Witch Hazel
Witch hazel helps to combine the essential oils and water, which helps the scent to linger longer.

How Do You Use Fall Room Sprays?
To use this fall room spray, simply shake well before use and spritz all around the room. It can also be sprayed directly onto pillows, curtains, blankets, or couches.
How to Store DIY Fall Room Spray
Heat can cause mold and bacteria to grow, so try to store this DIY room spray in a cool, dark place, like under your bathroom or kitchen sink.
Keeping it in a dark glass bottle is also important because sunlight can damage the essential oils used in this DIY fall room spray.
And the bottle should be made out of glass because pure essential oils are very potent, and plastic may begin to deteriorate and leach into the DIY fall room spray.
When Does Homemade Room Spray Expire?
Homemade products made with water that does not contain a preservative don’t last very long. That is because bacteria and mold can grow quite quickly in water—even in distilled water.
So, since this DIY fall room spray is made with part water, its shelf life isn’t very long.
If you follow the directions above and make sure to store the DIY fall room spray in a cool, dark place, it should last around 30 days.
Can Tap Water Be Used Instead Of Distilled Water?
I personally only use distilled water because the tap water where I live is full of toxins.
Also, the minerals in tap water can clog your spray nozzle.
But you’re free to use whatever type of water you would like. Distilled water is just my personal preference.
If you know your tap water is safe or you are just not concerned about the potential toxic chemicals in the tap water, then by all means, use that instead.
Why Do You Need Witch Hazel in Room Spray?
Witch hazel is an important ingredient in homemade room sprays. It helps combine the essential oils and water, allowing the scent to linger longer.
What Can I Use Instead of Witch Hazel in Room Spray?
If you don’t have witch hazel on hand, you can use drinkable grain alcohol (ethanol) or vodka instead.
I decided to use witch hazel in this recipe because many people already have it on hand, and it can be easily found at your local drugstore.
Plus, I’m not 100% comfortable using room spray made with high-proof alcohol around my family as it can be an upper respiratory irritant.
And it can also be difficult to mask the strong alcohol scent.
Is Witch Hazel or Vodka Better for Room Spray?
Some claim that using vodka instead of witch hazel will help the scent last longer, but I’ve tried both and didn’t notice any difference.
In my opinion, witch hazel and vodka serve the same purpose and are both great for making DIY fall room sprays, other than the fact that not everyone is comfortable using room spray made with vodka around their family.
Tips for Using Essential Oil Room Sprays
Always shake well before using. If the spray does not have a strong enough scent, add more drops of essential oil.
