Essential Oils

Essential oils are my go-to whenever I want my house to smell amazing. I used to be obsessed with buying fall candles from Bath & Body Works, but that was before I learned about the risks associated with burning candles.

When you burn candles, volatile organic compounds and particles are released into the air.

Extended exposure to these volatile compounds and particles can actually lead to heart and lung problems.

Burning candles made from paraffins releases soot into the air, and breathing in too much of any kind of soot or smoke can be potentially dangerous to your health.

Burning scented candles is even worse because many scented candles contain formaldehyde, which can be released into the air when burned.

Read this article to learn more about the health risks associated with burning candles.

So, with all that being said, essential oils are a great alternative to burning candles. I threw out all my candles a few years ago, and honestly, I don’t miss them at all.

If you’re unfamiliar with essential oils, you can read my Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Essential Oils to learn more.

But in a nutshell, essential oils are a highly concentrated form of a plant’s natural oils. They have been used for thousands of years to promote healing and wellness.

They are also an amazing, all-natural way to make your house smell like fall or any other season or scent, for that matter.

Not only is there no risk of burning your house down, which is something I always worried about whenever I burned candles, but there aren’t any major health risks associated with diffusing essential oils.

Essential oils can actually fill the air with antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiviral properties that can be good for your health.

My favorite fall essential oils are listed below.

  • Clove
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Ginger
  • Orange
  • Lemon
  • Frankincense

You’ll need a diffuser if you don’t already have one. The good news is you don’t have to spend a lot to get a great diffuser. Amazon has some really good, affordable diffusers.

A few I recommend are below.

Plant Therapy has some custom fall blends that are really, really good. My favorite is Pumpkin Pie.

Eden’s Garden also has some fun fall blends. I really love Sweater Weather.

So, if you’re not into creating your own blends, you have a few different options. Whatever you decide, make sure your oils are 100% pure.

Not all essential oils are created equal, and many sold today are synthetic. Synthetic oils can be very bad for your health, so do your research and make sure you choose a reputable brand.

I used to use Young Living, but after a lot of research, I discovered many other brands that sell high-quality oils for way less!

And even better, there is no middleman and no pressure to buy or sell!

A few of my favorite essential oil brands are Plant TherapySimply Earth, and Far & Wild essential oils.

If you decide to buy from Simply Earth, you can use the code HAPPYHEARTFREE to receive a free $45 Simply Earth gift card with the purchase of your first recipe box.

If you are unfamiliar with Simply Earth or their recipe box, you can check out previous boxes here.

Fall Room Sprays

Room sprays are the perfect alternative to air fresheners. Air fresheners are just as harmful as candles, if not worse, so if you’re still using it, throw it out.

I promise you won’t miss it, and you’ll wish you’d done it sooner, especially when you learn how bad air fresheners really are.

Air fresheners are filled with endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, allergens, and so many other nasty things.

They can really wreak havoc on your health and the health of your family and pets!

Synthetic fragrance overload can trigger allergies and even asthma. Air fresheners, like some candles, may also contain formaldehyde, a well-known carcinogen.

You can read this article to learn more about the dangers of synthetic air fresheners.

I threw out all my air fresheners long before I learned of their dangers simply because they always gave me a pounding headache.

Now, I make my own custom room sprays. And I love them because I know exactly what’s in them, and you can customize them to smell however you want.

Use Fall Scented Cleaning Products

Using fall-scented cleaning products is a great way to clean your home and make it smell amazing.

I’m super passionate about using natural cleaning products. Store-bought cleaners, many of which are even labeled “natural,” can be terrible for your health.

You can check out my toxin-free cleaning guide to learn more about the dangers associated with many popular cleaning products.

I like to make my own homemade cleaners, and I have a DIY thieves cleaner that makes my whole house smell like fall whenever I use it.

I recommend you try it out!

I also have a homemade all-purpose cleaner that you can customize to make it smell like fall. Simply add some of the fall essential oils above to the recipe.

Bake Something Yummy

One of the best ways to make your house smell like fall is to bake. Bake apple pie, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread—pretty much anything fall-related, and your whole home will smell amazing!

I love essential oils and room sprays, but nothing can quite compare to the smell of fresh-baked pumpkin pie. It’s something essential oils can’t replicate.

Believe me, I’ve tried!

I know it’s more time-consuming than just turning on the diffuser, but it’s not without its reward. You get a delicious-smelling home and also something delicious to eat.

So, if you have guests coming over and you want that warm, inviting fall scent—bake something yummy. Your home will smell like fall, and you’ll have something delicious to serve your guests.

Some of my favorite fall recipes are below.

Fall Simmer Pot

Simmer pots are an easy, all-natural way to make your home smell and feel like fall. Add your fall-scented ingredients to a pot and let it simmer on the stove.

I prefer to use a crockpot because it’s more of a set-and-forget way to do a simmer pot. Plus, our home runs on propane, which is really expensive where I live, so it’s a lot cheaper for me to use the crockpot instead.

To make your own simmer pot, combine water and all your ingredients in a pot and simmer on low heat. You can allow it to simmer however long you like; just be sure to replenish the water as needed.

Popular additions to a fall simmer pot are cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, cut-up apples, pumpkin spice, vanilla bean, and oranges.

Add water to a pot, bring it to a boil, add your ingredients, reduce the heat, and allow to simmer.
