I am a big fan of homemade bath and body products. Most store-bought body washes contain unnecessary toxic ingredients that can harm your health.
For example, many contain artificial fragrances and colors that can trigger allergies, immunotoxicity, endocrine disruption, and even cause cancer!
Some body washes contain ingredients like methylisothiazolinone or butylphenyl methylpropional, which can also trigger allergies and immunotoxicity.
Even some so-called natural products can contain harmful ingredients, so you really have to do your research. I use the EWG app and the Think Dirty app to research products before buying.
I used to love the holiday-scented body washes from Bath & Body Works. Every December, I would stock up on all my Christmas favorites.
I was super disappointed (but not surprised) to discover that Bath & Body Works products are among the worst offenders when it comes to poor, low-quality, and even dangerous ingredients.
But the good news is I’ve learned to create my own holiday-scented body products, and I don’t miss those Bath & Body Works products at all.
The even better news is that this DIY candy cane body wash has only a few ingredients and is all-natural.
This DIY candy cane body wash also makes a great homemade Christmas gift. I’ve created some cute printable gift tags that would go perfectly with this body wash. You can sign up to my email list below to receive them for free.
How to Make Homemade Candy Cane Body Wash
To make this homemade candy cane body wash, you’ll need the following ingredients and supplies.
Soap Dispenser
You will need a soap dispenser that holds around 8-12 ounces of body wash like this one. The recipe below will make around 8 ounces of body wash. You can add a little more castile soap if you use a larger soap dispenser.
I always use glass bottles rather than plastic. This is because essential oils contain potent chemical compounds that can break down and react when coming into contact with plastic.
It is also important to keep it in a dark glass bottle because sunlight can damage the essential oils used in this homemade body wash.
Castile Soap
Castile soap is the base for this body wash. Dr. Bronner’s castile soap contains plant-based ingredients and absolutely no synthetic preservatives, thickeners, or foaming agents.
I always buy unscented castile soap so that I can customize the scent myself.
Castile soap is great for so many different homemade products. I use it in my DIY Thieves hand soap, homemade all-purpose cleaner, as well as so many other things.
I like to always have it on hand!
Almond Oil
Because castile soap can be kind of drying, it’s important to add almond oil to the body wash. Almond oil makes this body wash extra moisturizing.
You can also use jojoba oil or fractionated coconut oil if you don’t have almond oil on hand.
Vegetable Glycerin
Vegetable glycerin helps thicken the body wash and provides additional moisturizing properties.
Peppermint & Spearmint Essential Oil
Essential oils give this body wash its candy cane scent. You’ll need only two—peppermint and spearmint.
Need Essential Oils?
Some essential oil brands can be pretty pricey. But what I’ve discovered over the years since I’ve been using essential oils is that you don’t have to spend a lot to get high-quality essential oils.
However, there are also many terrible brands out there, so make sure to do your research.
Not all essential oils are created equal. Just because a brand is expensive that doesn’t automatically mean it’s good, and just because a brand is cheap, that doesn’t automatically mean that it is bad.
Just make sure you do your research before buying essential oils.

I use Plant Therapy, Simply Earth, and Far & Wild essential oils for all my essential oil needs, including creating DIYs.
I used to use a very well-known, more expensive brand, but these more affordable brands work just as well, if not better.
So, if you need essential oils, save your money and buy from Plant Therapy, Far & Wild, or Simply Earth. You can read my full brand/oil reviews below.

How to Use Homemade Candy Cane Body Wash?
This body wash works best when used with a body loofa sponge like these. You’ll also need to shake it well before each use.
How to Store DIY Candy Cane Body Wash?
This DIY candy cane body wash can be stored in the shower or tub as long as it isn’t exposed to excessive sunlight or heat.
Sunlight can damage the essential oils used in this homemade body wash, and excessive heat can cause mold and bacteria to grow.
For most people, storing the body wash in the shower or bath isn’t going to be a problem. However, if you have excessive sunlight or heat in the tub or shower area, you may want to store the body wash in a dark, cool place, like under the bathroom sink.
When Does This Homemade Body Wash Expire?
This homemade body wash should stay good for at least a year.
Keep in mind that this is assuming all the ingredients used are fresh. If they are not, this body wash will expire whenever the ingredients you used are set to expire.
A Few More Tips
You’ll need to adjust the recipe if you decide to use a larger or smaller bottle than the one I recommended above.
If the bottle is just slightly smaller or larger, you can just increase or decrease the castile soap by a small amount.
If the scent of the body wash is too strong or not strong enough, you can increase or reduce the number of essential oil drops.
Just make sure to use discretion when increasing the number of drops. Spearmint and peppermint essential oils are both very powerful and can irritate the skin.
