DIY Hair Growth Spray with Essential Oils

Hair thinning or hair loss can be absolutely devastating for a woman. It can also be difficult for men, but it is much more expected and accepted for men than for women.

For many women, long hair is traditionally associated with femininity and beauty.

Long hair can also signify health and vitality, as it requires a balanced lifestyle, nutrition, and a healthy scalp to grow.

Hair thinning or loss cannot only make a woman feel insecure and self-conscious, but it can also signify an underlying health issue.

Common Causes of Hair Loss

There are many different causes of hair loss in women. The best way to determine the root cause of hair loss is to work with your healthcare provider.

Below are the most common causes of hair loss in women.

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal fluctuations, especially those linked to pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause, can lead to hair loss.

Stress

Physical or emotional stress can lead to telogen effluvium, a condition where hair is pushed into the resting phase, resulting in sudden shedding. Major surgeries, extreme stress, or traumatic life events can trigger this type of hair loss.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Deficiencies in iron, vitamin D, protein, and other essential nutrients can impact hair health and lead to hair loss. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is crucial for maintaining healthy hair growth.

Scalp Conditions

Conditions like dandruff, fungal infections, and psoriasis can affect the scalp’s health, leading to inflammation and hair loss. Treating the underlying scalp issue can often improve hair growth.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

PCOS can lead to excess production of androgens (male hormones), which can cause thinning hair on the scalp and increased hair growth in other areas.

Other common causes of hair loss in women include thyroid disorders, autoimmune diseases, and medications and medical treatments.

How to Stop Hair Loss

As I mentioned, working with your healthcare provider is the best way to stop hair loss. However, if you cannot work with a healthcare provider or your healthcare provider has failed to help, I recommend checking out the resources below.

I also highly recommend the book Hair Like a Fox: A Bioenergetic View of Pattern Hair Loss by Danny Roddy.

There are also many different things that you can do to promote hair growth. You can read this post—10 Natural Ways to Grow Your Hair Faster, to learn more about them.

One of my favorite ways to promote hair growth is using homemade hair growth spray.

Homemade Hair Spray for Hair Growth and Thickness

Homemade hair growth spray is made with a unique blend of ingredients that can stimulate hair growth. It can be used by both men and women.

This DIY hair growth spray is made with essential oils that promote hair growth by reviving and regenerating cells, increasing hair growth and thickness.

How to Make Hair Growth Tonic at Home

Making homemade hair growth spray is super easy. You just need a few ingredients and a little time.

One of the best parts about making homemade hair growth spray is you control what goes into the spray, avoiding harsh chemicals, preservatives, and synthetic fragrances found in commercial products.

Also, homemade hair growth spray is generally cheaper than store-bought alternatives, especially since you can make large batches with affordable, accessible ingredients.

Homemade Hair Growth Spray Ingredients

To make DIY hair growth spray at home, you’ll just need witch hazel, a few essential oils, and a container to store your hair growth spray in. Below, you can learn more about everything you’ll need.

Container

The size of the spray bottle is totally up to you. I prefer to use a 3.4-ounce bottle like this one. But you can use whatever size you like.

Please note that the recipe below is for a 3.4-ounce bottle of hair growth spray, so if you decide to use a larger or smaller bottle, you will need to adjust the recipe.

It’s also really important to only use a glass bottle. Essential oils contain potent chemical compounds that can break down and react when coming in contact with plastic.

I recommend a bottle that sprays a fine mist—that way, you won’t have a bunch of hair growth spray dripping down your neck.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is a key ingredient in this homemade hair growth spray. It promotes blood circulation to the scalp, increasing oxygen supply to the hair follicles.

I recommend only using alcohol-free witch hazel because alcohol can be extremely drying.

Witch hazel can also be drying, but I have an oily scalp, so I don’t mind it at all. I actually notice I can go more days without washing my hair whenever I use this homemade hair growth spray. It almost acts like a dry shampoo.

However, if you already have a very dry scalp, you might want to add a tiny bit of oil to the hair growth spray. I’ll explain more about that below.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary essential oil has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It can support nerve growth and promote circulation.

A 2015 study suggests that rosemary essential oil can prevent hair loss. That same study found that rosemary essential oil was as effective as minoxidil, a popular hair loss treatment.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Many shampoos contain peppermint essential oil because it’s amazing for your scalp. Like rosemary essential oil, peppermint essential oil also supports blood circulation to the scalp, which helps your hair to grow.

A 2014 study on mice found that peppermint essential oil caused the hair of mice to grow faster and thicker and increased blood flow to undernourished hair follicles.

Cedarwood Essential Oil

Cedarwood essential oil can stimulate hair follicles and improve circulation to the scalp. It also helps balance the scalp’s oil glands, reducing hair loss and promoting hair growth.

Unfortunately, no significant studies have been done on cedarwood essential oil and its potential hair growth benefits.

The majority of the evidence is anecdotal.

Lavender Essential Oil (optional)

Lavender essential oil helps support blood circulation to the scalp, promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss.

This 2016 study found that lavender essential oil made hair grow faster when tested on mice.

Lavender essential oil is also antimicrobial and antibacterial, which means it can prevent scalp-related issues like dandruff.

That said, lavender essential oil is completely optional because the other suggested essential oils have the same benefits. In my opinion, adding lavender essential oil is a bit unnecessary.

However, I recommend adding it as an alternative to one of the essential oils above. For example, if you don’t have cedarwood or peppermint essential oil on hand, you can use lavender essential oil instead.

Tea Tree Essential Oil (optional)

Tea tree essential oil doesn’t necessarily promote hair growth, but thanks to its antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, it can combat scalp issues like dandruff and fungal infections.

So, if you are dealing with scalp issues, I would add the tea tree essential oil—if you are not, I would skip it.

Fractionated Coconut Oil (optional)

I would only add fractionated coconut oil if you have an extremely dry scalp. As I previously mentioned, witch hazel can potentially dry out the scalp.

This is a positive benefit for people like me who have an oily scalp. But this would not be a good thing if you already have a dry scalp.

You can combat dryness by adding just a bit of fractionated coconut oil or another similar oil to the hair growth spray—for example, jojoba oil, almond oil, or pumpkin oil.

Need Essential Oils?

There are many essential oil companies that sell high-quality essential oils. I used to use Young Living oils exclusively, but I just couldn’t afford to use them anymore.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover several brands that sell amazing, high-quality essential oils at very affordable prices.

A few of my favorites are Eden’s Garden, Simply Earth, Plant Therapy, and Far & Wild.

If you purchase from Simply Earth, you can use the code HAPPYHEARTFREE to receive a big bonus box and a $45 Simply Earth gift card with the purchase of an essential oil recipe box.

You’ll get the recipe box, the big bonus box, plus a $45 Simply Earth gift card for only $29.99 (new customers only)!!!

How to Use Homemade Hair Growth Spray

This homemade hair growth spray is super easy to use. Simply shake the bottle well and spray directly onto the scalp. Gently massage the spray into the scalp with your fingertips.

It can also be sprayed directly onto the hair to refresh and add a little volume.

I don’t recommend using the spray right before you wash your hair because that would just be a waste of product. You want to give the hair growth spray time to penetrate the scalp and hair follicles.

I like to use the spray at night before I go to sleep. I almost always use it on dry hair, but it can also be used on wet hair.

How to Store DIY Hair Growth Spray?

Heat can cause mold and bacteria to grow, so try to store this DIY hair growth spray in a cool, dark place, like under your bathroom sink.

The bottle should be made out of glass because pure essential oils are very potent, and plastic may begin to deteriorate and leach into the DIY hair growth spray.

It’s also best to use a dark bottle whenever possible because sunlight can damage the essential oils used in this homemade hair growth spray.

However, it is not 100% necessary. I currently have mine in a clear frosted bottle, and I just make sure to store it under my bathroom sink.

When Does Homemade Hair Growth Spray Expire?

This homemade hair growth spray will expire whenever the ingredients you use are set to expire.

Witch hazel has a very long shelf life, but it is generally recommended to be used within two years of opening the bottle.

Depending on the type and how they are stored, essential oils can last anywhere from 2 to 8 years.

So, if you use fresh ingredients, this homemade hair growth spray can last a few years.

However, if you use this DIY hair growth spray three times a week or more, you will probably need to make a new batch in about 60 days.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, homemade hair growth spray offers a natural, cost-effective solution for promoting hair health and stimulating growth.

Consistency in application, along with a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, can maximize results, making homemade hair growth spray a beneficial addition to any hair care routine.

However, as with any natural remedy, individual results may vary, so it’s essential to find the blend that works best for your unique hair needs.
