DIY Hair Growth Oil

If you’re looking for a natural way to boost hair growth and nourish your scalp, making your own DIY hair growth oil is a great place to start. This simple yet powerful blend uses carrier and essential oils to strengthen roots, stimulate follicles, and support healthy, thicker hair—without the harsh chemicals found in store-bought products.

DIY Hair Growth Oil

There are many reasons why women experience thinning hair or hair loss. Sometimes it’s due to stress, thyroid problems, or diet issues.

A few years ago, I went through a period of time when not only was I losing my hair like crazy, but it also just would not grow. It was extremely frustrating.

I was eventually diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, which was most likely causing this issue.

Since that diagnosis, I’ve been on a natural healing journey. Over time, not only has my physical health improved, but so has the health of my hair.

My hair isn’t just softer and shinier, it’s also longer and thicker.

Eating healthy and taking different vitamins and supplements have played a huge role in the health of my hair.

But that isn’t the only thing that has helped my hair grow longer and thicker. I apply hair growth oil to my hair at least once a week.

I truly believe this all-natural oil is what has helped my hair the most.

It is filled with oils that promote hair growth and thickness. My hair is actually longer and healthier than it was before I started to lose my hair.

So, if you have been experiencing thinning hair or hair loss, I recommend trying this homemade hair growth oil.

What is Hair Growth Oil?

Hair growth oil is a blend of carrier and essential oils that promote hair growth and thickness. The essential oils and carrier oils used will depend on your personal needs and preferences.

Below are some of the best carrier and essential oils for hair growth. You can use a combination of any of these oils when creating your own DIY hair growth oil.

Best Carrier Oils for Hair Growth

Castor Oil

Castor oil is a vegetable oil pressed from castor beans. Castor oil is used for many different things, but it might be most well-known for its amazing hair benefits.

Many people use castor oil as a hair conditioner. Castor oil can soften the hair, ease dandruff, moisturize the scalp, and help promote hair growth.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much scientific evidence to support the claim that castor oil promotes hair growth, but plenty of anecdotal evidence exists.

I have personally used castor oil on my hair (and brows and lashes, too) for years and have noticed a huge difference. So, I definitely believe it helps promote hair growth.

Almond Oil

Almond oil is obviously made from almonds. It is rich in biotin, which helps keep hair healthy and strong.

Almond oil can help prevent split ends by nourishing and conditioning your strands. The fewer split ends you have, the less breakage you will have, which will help your hair grow longer.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is made from the seed of the Simmondsia chinensis plant. It moisturizes and protects the hair from dryness, split ends, and breakage.

Jojoba oil can also dissolve buildup and unclog the hair follicles, which allows a clear passageway for strands to grow, which will help your hair grow longer.

Hempseed Oil

Hempseed oil is made from cold-pressing hemp seeds. Hempseed oil contains fatty acids that help promote hair growth.

Hempseed oil also moisturizes the hair and scalp.

Why I Don’t Recommend Coconut Oil

I love to use coconut oil as a hair mask, but I don’t recommend it for this DIY hair growth oil because coconut oil can clog pores when applied directly to the scalp, and this hair growth oil needs to be applied to the scalp.

Best Essential Oils for Hair Growth

Many essential oils are good for hair growth. I actually have an entire post about the best essential oils for hair growth and thickness.

Below are my favorite essential oils for this DIY hair growth oil. If you would like to learn more about the hair growth benefits of each essential oil, I recommend reading the article above.

Homemade Hair Growth Oil Ingredients

To make this DIY hair growth oil, you’ll need to gather a few ingredients and supplies.

First, you’ll need to pick at least two carrier oils and two essential oils from the list above.

You’ll also need a 4-ounce glass bottle to put the oils in. These are the bottles that I use.

My go-to DIY hair growth oil recipe contains a blend of the oils below.

But as I previously mentioned, you can use whatever oil combinations you prefer. All the oils recommended above are great for hair growth!

How to Make DIY Hair Growth Oil

To make this homemade hair growth oil, first fill your glass bottle with your choice of carrier oils.

Fill it almost completely. But make sure to leave room for the essential oils. Then add 30-45 drops total of your choice of essential oils.

Attach the dropper and roll between your hands to blend well.

My favorite hair growth recipe is below.

Castor oil is absolutely amazing for hair. But it is a very thick oil. So, if you do decide to use it, I recommend mixing it with another carrier oil to make it less thick. That way, it will be easier to apply to your hair and scalp.

Once again, remember that you can use whatever combination of essential oils and carrier oils you choose. This isn’t rocket science. All the oils recommended above are great for hair!

How to Use DIY Hair Growth Oil

This hair growth oil should be applied to dry hair and left on overnight. About once a week, I thoroughly saturate my hair with the oil and massage it into my scalp for 4-5 minutes.

I leave it on overnight and shampoo my hair the next morning to wash it out.

Ever since I started using this hair growth oil regularly, my hair has grown significantly longer and is much healthier and stronger.

How to Store Homemade Hair Growth Oil?

This DIY hair growth oil should be stored in an airtight (preferably glass) container.

Never allow water to get into the homemade hair growth oil. This will prevent the hair growth oil from being contaminated with harmful bacteria.

When Does Homemade Hair Growth Oil Expire?

If you follow the directions above and don’t allow harmful bacteria to contaminate the hair growth oil, it should be safe to use for at least 1-2 years.

Keep in mind that this is assuming all the ingredients used are fresh. If they are not fresh, then this hair growth oil will expire whenever the ingredients you used are set to expire.

That said, essential oils and carrier oils such as castor and almond oil have very long shelf lives. However, their shelf lives are dependent on how they are stored.

Carrier oils and essential oils should be stored in a cool, dark place—if not, they can go bad sooner.

I hope that makes sense. It’s best to use fresh ingredients whenever possible when making homemade products. That way, you can ensure a long shelf life.

Need Essential Oils?

There are many essential oil companies that sell high-quality essential oils. I used to use Young Living oils exclusively, but I just couldn’t afford to use them anymore.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover several brands that sell amazing, high-quality essential oils at very affordable prices.

I highly recommend Simply EarthPlant Therapy, or Far & Wild essential oils. These three brands sell high-quality oils at affordable prices. I’ve been using these brands for years, and they are amazing!

Final Thoughts

Incorporating a DIY hair growth oil into your routine is a simple yet powerful way to support healthier, stronger hair naturally. With the right blend of nourishing oils and consistent use, you can give your scalp the boost it needs to encourage vibrant hair growth—without any harsh chemicals.

I used to spend a lot of money on expensive hair serums and masks from department stores to help my hair grow longer, but not anymore, because this works better.

And it is 100% natural and is a fraction of the price!

So I recommend you give it a try and let me know how you like it 🙂
