DIY Hair Growth Oil

There are many reasons why women experience thinning hair or hair loss. Sometimes it’s due to stress, thyroid problems, or diet issues.

And sometimes it’s just hereditary.

I went through a period of time a few years ago where not only was I losing my hair like crazy but my hair just would not grow. It was extremely frustrating.

I was eventually diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease which most likely was causing this issue.

Since that diagnosis I’ve been on a journey of natural healing and overtime not only has my physical health improved but so has the health of my hair.

My hair isn’t just softer and shinier, it’s longer and thicker.

Eating healthy and taking different vitamins and supplements has played a huge role in the health of my hair.

But that isn’t the only thing that has helped my hair to grow longer and thicker. I apply hair growth oil to my hair at least once a week.

I truly believe this all-natural oil is what has helped my hair the most.

It is filled with oils that promote hair growth and thickness. My hair is longer and healthier than it was before I started to lose my hair.

So if you have been suffering from thinning hair or hair loss I recommend you try this homemade hair growth oil.

What is Hair Growth Oil?

Hair growth oil is a mixture/blend of carrier oils and essential oils that promote hair growth and thickness. The essential oils and carrier oils used will depend on your personal needs and preferences.

Below are some of the best carrier oils and essential oils for hair growth. You can use a combination of any of these oils when creating your own DIY hair growth oil.

Best Carrier Oils for Hair Growth

Castor Oil

Castor oil is a vegetable oil pressed from castor beans. Castor oil is used for many different things but it might be most well known for its amazing hair benefits.

Many people use castor oil as a hair conditioner. Castor oil can soften the hair, ease dandruff, moisturize the scalp, and help promote hair growth.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a whole lot of scientific evidence to prove castor oil promotes hair growth but there is plenty of anecdotal evidence.

I have personally used castor oil on my hair (brows and lashes too) for years and I have noticed a huge difference. So I definitely believe it helps promote hair growth.

Almond Oil

Almond oil is obviously made from almonds. Almond oil is rich in biotin which helps keep hair healthy and strong.

Almond oil can help prevent split ends by nourishing and conditioning your strands. The less split ends you have the less breakage you will have which will help your hair grow longer.

You can learn more about the hair benefits of almond oil here.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is made from the seed of the Simmondsia chinensis plant. It’s very moisturizing and can protect the hair from dryness, split ends, and breakage.

Jojoba oil can also dissolve buildup by unclogging the follicles and allowing a clear passageway for strands to grow which will help your hair to grow.

Hempseed Oil

Hempseed oil is made from cold-pressing hemp seeds. Hempseed oil contains fatty acids that help promote hair growth.

Hempseed oil also moisturizes the hair and scalp.

Why I don’t recommend Coconut Oil

I love to use coconut oil as a hair mask but I don’t recommend it for this DIY hair growth oil because coconut oil can clog pores.

And in order to experience the best results from this hair growth oil you’ll need to massage the oil directly into your scalp.

Best Essential Oils For Hair Growth

There are many essential oils that are good for hair growth. I actually have an entire post all about the best essential oils for hair growth and thickness.

Below are my favorite essential oils to use in this DIY hair growth oil. If you would like to learn more about the hair growth benefits of each essential oil I recommend reading the article above.

Homemade Hair Growth Oil Ingredients

To make this DIY hair growth oil you’ll need to gather a few ingredients and supplies.

First, you’ll need to pick at least two carrier oils from the list above and at least two essential oils from the list above.

And you’ll also need a 4oz glass bottle to put the oils in. These are the bottles that I use.

My favorite DIY hair growth oil recipe contains a blend of the oils below.

Castor oil

Almond Oil

Lavender Essential oil

Cedarwood essential oil

But like I mentioned earlier you can use whatever oil combinations you prefer. All the oils recommended above are great for hair growth!

How to Make DIY Hair Growth Oil

To make this homemade hair growth oil first fill your glass bottle with your choice of carrier oils.

I like to add dry flowers but they are just for aesthetics. They aren’t necessary at all.

Fill it almost completely. But make sure to leave room for the essential oils.

Then add 30-45 drops total of your choice of essential oils.

Attach dropper and roll between hands to blend well.

My favorite hair growth recipe is below.

  • 2oz Castor Oil
  • 2oz Almond Oil
  • 20 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • 20 Drops Cedarwood Essential Oil

I think castor oil is absolutely amazing for hair. But it is a very thick oil. So if you do decide to use it I recommend mixing it with another carrier oil to make it less thick. That way it will be easier to apply to your hair.

And once again remember you can use whatever combination of essential oils and carrier oils that you choose. This isn’t rocket science. All the oils recommended above are great for the hair!

How To use DIY Hair Growth Oil

This hair growth oil should be applied to dry hair and left on overnight. About once a week I will fully saturate my hair with the oil and massage it into my scalp for 5-10 minutes.

I leave it in overnight and wash it out in the shower the next morning.

Ever since I started using this oil on a regular basis my hair has grown significantly longer and is a lot healthier and stronger.

Need Essential Oils?

There are many essential oil companies that sell high-quality essential oils. I used to use Young Living oils exclusively but I just couldn’t afford to use them anymore.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover several brands that sell amazing, high-quality essential oils at very affordable prices.

I love Florihana essential oils and I use them quite often. If you’re not familiar with Florihana essential oils you can check out my full Florihana essential oils review.

I also regularly use Eden’s GardenPlant Therapy, and Simply Earth essential oils.

If you decide to buy from Simply Earth you can use the code HAPPYHEARTFREE to receive a $40 Simply Earth gift card with the purchase of your first recipe box.

If you are not familiar with Simply Earth or their recipe box you can check out last month’s box here.

I used to spend so much money on expensive hair serums and masks from department stores to help my hair grow longer but not anymore.

Because this works better.

And it is 100% natural and is a fraction of the price!

So I recommend you give it a try and let me know how you like it 🙂
