DIY Body Oil for Glowing Skin
I love body oil. It is one of my favorite ways to keep my skin soft and smooth. And it is so easy to make at home!
Body oil is a great alternative to body lotion. They have very similar benefits. They both help to moisturize the skin and heal dry, flaky skin.
Although body lotion isn’t difficult to make at home, homemade body oil is significantly easier to make.
It only takes a few ingredients and a few minutes.

How Do I Make Body Oil at Home
To make body oil at home, you’ll need a carrier oil or two, a few essential oils, and a container to store your body oil in. You can learn more about everything you’ll need below.
Jar or Bottle
It’s important to always use glass containers to store your essential oil DIY products.
The container should be made out of glass because pure essential oils are very potent, and plastic may begin to deteriorate and leach into the body oil.
I typically also recommend using dark-colored bottles when making homemade products using essential oils because sunlight can damage the oils.
But in this case, I broke my own rule for no reason other than the fact that this body oil is blue and absolutely beautiful. I just honestly love the way it looks in a clear glass container.
Plus, I go through it so quickly that I’m not very concerned about the sunlight damaging the oils.
So you can choose whatever type of container you wish, but these are just my personal recommendations.
The container I used is 12 ounces, which is the size recommended for this homemade body oil recipe.
However, you could also use a 6-ounce container (although I had difficulty locating a 6-ounce glass dispenser on Amazon) and just divide the ingredients in half.
Below are some container suggestions for this DIY body oil recipe.
- 12-ounce Clear Glass Soap Dispenser (this is the one in the photos)
- Black 12-ounce Glass Soap Dispenser
- 7-ounce Clear Glass Soap Dispenser
Carrier Oil
The base for this homemade body oil is a carrier oil. My favorite carrier oil to use is fractionated coconut oil because it has many different skin benefits, it’s clear, and it is affordable.
I like the carrier oil to be clear because blue tansy essential oil is added to the carrier oil, which gives the body oil its beautiful blue color, and colored carrier oils can distort the appearance of the body oil.
If you are using a dark-colored container or you just simply don’t care about the color of the body oil, then feel free to use a colored carrier oil.
Almond oil is also another great option. However, it can be a little more expensive. Also, almond oil can have a slight yellow tint, but I’ve used it as a base for this DIY body oil before, and it doesn’t affect the blue color.
There are many other amazing carrier oils for the skin (jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, argan oil), but I don’t recommend them for this DIY body oil because they can either be too thick, too dark in color, or simply just too expensive.
Essential Oils
Essential oils add fragrance to this DIY body oil, additional skin benefits, and a beautiful blue color.
So many essential oils can be added to homemade body oil, but I wanted to keep this recipe as simple as possible, so I chose to only add two.
Blue Tansy Essential Oil
Blue tansy is such a fun essential oil. Not only does it smell amazing, but it has a blue pigment, which gives this body oil its color.
Blue tansy can help prevent skin dryness and soften the texture of the skin. It is also full of calming and soothing properties that can help to improve symptoms associated with eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.
Blue tansy essential oil can be a little pricey. But a little bit of this oil goes a long way. You only need to add a few drops to this homemade body oil to achieve the gorgeous blue pigment and the amazing skin benefits.

Also, as long as you use the recommended drops, you don’t have to worry about this DIY body oil staining your skin, clothes, or towels.
But blue tansy essential oil definitely can stain if used undiluted, so just keep that in mind when you are putting together this recipe.
Geranium Essential Oil
Geranium is another essential oil that is amazing for the skin. It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which can both help to soothe the skin and improve the overall health of the skin.
Also, it smells really good!
Vitamin E Oil (optional)
Vitamin E oil isn’t completely necessary, but it can add a few extra skin benefits.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant. It helps to protect cells from damage, including skin cells.
Homemade Body Oil with Coconut Oil
As I mentioned several times already, this homemade body oil is super easy to make. To get started, you’ll need to gather your container and all the necessary ingredients.
First, add 1.5 cups of fractionated coconut oil to the container. I like to use a funnel when doing this. It makes it so much easier and less messy!
Next, add 20 drops of geranium essential oil.
Then add five drops of blue tansy essential oil and two teaspoons of vitamin E oil.
Attach the pump and make sure it is secured tightly. Shake well until everything is well blended, and you’re done!

How to Use DIY Body Oil
This DIY body oil is simple to use. Just apply it the same way that you would a body lotion. Simply add some to the palm of your hands and massage gently into your skin.
This body oil can be used anytime, but the best time to use it is right after a bath or shower when the skin is a little more permeable. This will allow for optimal absorption.
You can also use it as an in-shower body oil. Right before you are about to get out of the shower, massage the oil onto your body. Then rinse thoroughly.
If you decide to use it as an in-shower body oil, just be sure never to allow water to get into the homemade body oil.
How to Store Homemade Body Oil
This DIY body oil for glowing skin should be stored in an airtight (preferably glass) container.
Never allow water to get into the homemade body oil. This will prevent the body oil from being contaminated with harmful bacteria.
How Long Does Homemade Body Oil Last
If you follow the directions above and don’t allow harmful bacteria to contaminate the body oil, it should be safe to use for at least 1-2 years.
Keep in mind this is assuming all the ingredients used are fresh. If they are not fresh, then this body oil will expire whenever the ingredients you used are set to expire.
That said, essential oils and carrier oils such as coconut and almond oil have very long shelf lives. However, their shelf lives are dependent on how they are stored.
Carrier oils and essential oils should be stored in a cool, dark place; if not, they can go bad sooner.
I hope that makes sense. It’s best to use fresh ingredients whenever possible when making homemade skincare products. That way, you can ensure a long shelf life.
Well, I hope you enjoy this homemade body oil for glowing skin. It is definitely one of my favorite homemade body products. It’s simple to make, it’s beautiful, it smells wonderful, and it truly leaves your skin glowing!
