Essential Oils for Stress Relief
One thing in life that is pretty much unavoidable is stress. And some of us are definitely more prone to it than others. Like me.
I feel like my default is “freak out mode”. Which I’m not proud of. But I’ve kind of just always been that way.
I can be a bit high strung and I definitely have a type-A personality. Which isn’t a bad thing. But I find myself worrying and stressing a lot more than I should.

It’s something I’ve been aware of for quite some time and I’m working on different ways to chill out and too quit stressing so much.
A couple of different things that are really helping me to manage my stress are supplements like ashwagandha, relaxation tea, breathing techniques and essential oils.
Because guess what?
There is so much in life you can’t control. And it’s so easy to worry and stress about things in life. But one thing you can control is your reaction to life’s circumstances.
I find essential oils extremely helpful. Not only do they have very calming and relaxing effects but when I apply or diffuse them they often remind me to just breathe and relax.
Best Essential Oils For Stress Relief
I use essential oils for so many different things. I love to use essential oils for sleep support, hair growth, skin issues, and so many other things.
One of the ways I like to use essential oils on a daily basis is for stress management. Below are my favorite stress-relieving essential oils.
Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender is one of the most popular and well-known essential oils for relaxation and stress relief. It can also help relieve anxiety and insomnia.
A study done in 2012 concluded that lavender essential oil can impact the limbic system which is the part of the brain that controls emotions.
This is why many researchers believe lavender oil is so effective at reducing stress and anxiety.
Bergamot Essential Oil
In my opinion, Bergamot is one of the most underrated essential oils.
Bergamot essential oil is great for your hair and for your skin. It can also reduce pain and inflammation.
And it smells amazing!
But my favorite way to use bergamot essential oil is for stress relief. A small study conducted in 2015 suggested bergamot reduced feelings of stress and anxiety in their test subjects.
Sweet Orange Essential Oil
Sweet orange essential oil is one of my absolute favorite essential oils. I’m a huge fan of citrus.
It has such a calming and grounding effect. I use it all the time.
A study published in 2012 found orange essential oil was able to reduce and eliminate stress and anxiety.
Frankincense Essential Oil
Frankincense is known as the king of essential oils because it has so many benefits.
It’s great for the hair. It’s great for the skin. It’s great for sleep. It’s great for your immune system.
And honestly, I could go on and on.
So when I discovered the stress-reducing benefits of frankincense I wasn’t surprised at all.
Unfortunately, there hasn’t been a whole lot of studies or research done on the stress-relieving benefits of Frankincense.
Most of what I know about Frankincense and stress is based on my own personal experience and the experience of my friends and family.
I did stumble upon one study done on rats that stated Frankincense essential oil can counter the effects of stress and may be beneficial in the management of stress.
Ylang Ylang Essential Oil
Ylang Ylang is known as a natural, mild sedative. It can reduce anxiety and calm the nervous system.
One study done in 2006 showed ylang ylang essential oil absorbed through the skin may help reduce stress levels. Another study done in 2008 concluded that inhaling ylang ylang essential oil promoted feelings of calmness.
How to use essential oils for stress & relaxation
There are several different ways to use essential oils for stress relief. My favorite ways are below.
Diffuse | Diffusing is by far one of the easiest ways to use essential oils for stress relief. Just add a few drops of the essential oils I recommended above to your diffuser with some water. Turn it on and you’re good to go!
I love to add sweet orange and bergamot. But you can add whatever combination you choose.
If you need a diffuser you can check out Amazon for super affordable options.
Two I really like and recommend are the ASAKUKI portable essential oil diffuser and the InnoGear essential oil diffuser.
Inhale | When I start to feel stress coming on sometimes I’ll just grab a bottle of sweet orange or ylang ylang and inhale through the nose deeply right from the bottle.
Inhaling essential oils is a great opportunity to try out some relaxing breathing techniques as well!
Add to the bath | Taking a nice hot bath is a perfect way to unwind and destress. I like to take it up a notch by adding essential oils to the bathtub.
My favorite way to do this is by adding homemade bath bombs or bath oil made with essential oils to the tub.
Apply Topically | You can also apply the essential oils topically. Just make sure you always dilute with a carrier oil.
The easiest and most convenient way to do this is by making a roller blend. I’ve created a roller blend recipe for you that you can check out below.
