5 Lies People Believe About Essential Oils
Many people have experienced the amazing benefits of essential oils. But there are also many lies people believe about essential oils. Keep reading to find out what they are!
Lies People Believe About Essential Oils
I use essential oils every single day. Ever since I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease a few years ago (you can read my story here), I’ve been on a mission to eliminate the toxic products from my home and essential oils have helped me to do that.
There have actually been many studies confirming the connection between toxic chemicals and autoimmune disease. I’ve listed a few below if you would like to check them out.
- Toxicology of Autoimmune Diseases
- Environmental Chemicals and Autoimmune Disease
- Possible Environmental Triggers Associated With Autoimmune Diseases
Many of the products I used on a daily basis were filled with ingredients I could hardly pronounce and many of which were actually making me sick.
With the help of essential oils I’ve been able to eliminate many of these products from my home.
I now make my own hand soap, face serum, mouthwash, household cleaners, and so many other things.
Essential oils have changed my life and I’m very passionate about them.
With that being said, there are actually many lies or misconceptions people believe about essential oils that kinda drive me crazy!
And I wanted to address them because I believe they actually keep people from trying essential oils and experiencing their wellness benefits.
So let’s get started!

1 | Essential Oils Don’t Work
This is definitely the biggest lie some people believe about essential oils. Many people won’t even give essential oils a chance because they automatically assume they don’t work.
I think there are a few different reasons for this.
One reason is they just don’t have a proper understanding of what exactly essential oils are or how they work.
You can read my post What Are Essential Oils & How Do They Work if you would like to learn more about essential oils.
Another possible reason is that these people have tried them and unfortunately didn’t experience any significant benefits.
I strongly believe that the main reason some people don’t have a good experience with essential oils is because they don’t have the right essential oils (more about that below) or the right supplies to use the oils properly.
Having the right essential oil supplies (and the right oils) can determine your essential oil experience and your success.
If you don’t have the right items to properly use your essential oils, more than likely your oils are just going to sit there collecting dust.
You’re never going to experience the true benefit of essential oils until you start using them on a consistent basis.

Essential oils do work. But just not for absolutely everything.
2 | There’s An Oil For Everything
This one drives me extremely crazy because it is a lie or misconception that is perpetuated by people in the essential oil community.
And I definitely think it does more harm than good to the essential oil community.
When people claim that there is an essential oil for every kind of issue or ailment under the sun they make essential oil users seem crazy.
Because it simply isn’t true.
Yes, essential oils are helpful for many different things but not everything!
This is why the FDA has come down so hard on essential oil companies like Young Living.
Some of their distributors have claimed that essential oils can cure/treat Ebola, Parkinson’s, and other very serious diseases and conditions.
I’m not saying essential oils can’t help improve serious conditions or diseases but I am saying people have to be extremely careful about the claims they make. Especially when there hasn’t been very much scientific research done to prove the claims.
Because not only can the claims be misleading or dangerous but they can also give people false hope and that is just wrong!
There definitely is not an essential oil for absolutely everything!
3 | You Have to Join An MLM to Purchase Essential Oils
It seems like whenever I tell someone about essential oils they automatically assume I’m trying to sell them something or that I use Young Living or DoTerra.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m extremely appreciative of Young Living and DoTerra because they played a huge role in the popularity of essential oils and bringing them to the mainstream.
But it drives me insane when people believe or assume you have to join an MLM (Multi-Level Marketing Company) to buy essential oils.
Or that MLM brand essential oils are superior to non-MLM brands. This is an absolute marketing gimmick perpetuated by the MLM brands and it’s a lie.
I used to use Young Living essential oils exclusively because that was what I believed but eventually came to my senses and now use a variety of non-MLM brand essential oils.
Click here to check out the best non-MLM essential oil brands.
Please don’t believe you have to join an MLM company to purchase essential oils.
4 | All Essential Oil Brands Are Created Equal
So even though there are some absolutely amazing non-MLM essential oil companies, please keep in mind that not all essential oil brands are created equal.
Many oils being sold today are synthetic. Your body processes synthetic oils as a toxin which does not help your body but actually works against it.
I think this is why many people come to the conclusion that essential oils don’t work. Because they’re using cheap, synthetic oils from Amazon or Walmart.
So please do your research before purchasing essential oils. The brand does matter!

5 | Essential Oils Are Super Expensive
So often when I discuss essential oils with someone they’ll say they don’t use essential oils because they can’t afford them.
This makes me so sad!
Many people have come to this conclusion because of the grossly overpriced oils sold by MLM companies.
Not all essential oils are crazy expensive.
There are many high quality, affordable essential oils to choose from.
Expensive oils do not mean better oils!
You can check out reviews for some of my favorite essential oil brands below.
These brands sell essential oils at a fraction of the cost of popular MLM essential oil brands and their oils are amazing!!!
Final Thoughts
Okay, now that I got all of that off my chest I can go back to doing what I really love – sharing natural living DIYs and tips and tricks with you.
I hope I don’t come off snotty or rude. It’s just that as a natural living/essential oil blogger I feel like I’m constantly trying to combat these common lies and misconceptions constantly.
And, not just online but in real life with my friends and family and it definitely gets to me.
I want everyone to experience the same amazing benefits of essential oils that I have and I feel like these lies about essential oils that some people believe keep them from trying them.
So do you agree or disagree with me? Let me know in the comments below!
As a late stage cancer survivor, I will say this: there is no such thing as “false hope,” only “misplaced hope!”
Essential oils have their place in even cancer treatment, but I totally agree with you on the idea that you can’t rely on essential oils to cure your cancer. I say this as a completely crunchy person who has tried all sorts of crazy things to get myself healthy. 🙂
I really appreciate this list SO MUCH. Right after my diagnosis, I went all out on cutting all toxins from my life. That was great, except the only company I knew of to buy Toxin free products from was Young Living… and I could have used that money much more wisely. (There are excellent shampoos and sunscreens which don’t cost $25/bottle!)
I have a handful of YL essential oils, but I have been hesitant to buy more oils because I don’t have time to research the companies as well as I would like. Thank you for putting this together.
